Design Oasis and NEXUS Makes the Orange Bowl Halftime Show AWESOME!

Too cool!  Design Oasis made the Orange Bowl Halftime Show even more spectacular and full of pixels than anyone expected!  Such a great design!

MIAMI LAKES, FL – Most fans probably didn’t know what to expect when evenly matched Georgia Tech and Mississippi State squared off at the 2014 Capital One Orange Bowl, but there was one thing that everyone thought they’d see when they entered Sun Life Stadium for this iconic bowl game: a memorable halftime show. Amazing entertainment has become a tradition at the Orange Bowl, which in recent years has featured standout performances from the likes of Train, The Goo Goo Dolls, Kelly Clarkson, Kool & the Gang, Ciara and ZZ Top.  This year, Grammy-winning country superstars Little Big Town did the game’s halftime tradition proud with a nonstop high-energy seven-minute performance set against a dynamic lightshow featuring Nexus AW 7×7 panels from CHAUVET Professional.

Lighting designer Abbas Ritscher of The Design Oasis used 32 of the Nexus Aw 7×7 panels at the show, which was produced by ACT Productions, the Miami-based entertainment company that has produced the entertainment elements of the Orange Bowl’s pre-game and halftime events for the past decade. Ritscher lined the back wall of the mid-field stage with the powerful LED panels and also positioned them over the vomitorium (vom) walkways leading into the field.

From these positions, the DMX-controlled panels covered the entire field and much of the stadium with sharp crisp beams of warm 2800K white light that moved rapidly in vertical waves. “The panels gave us all the punch we needed for this very energized show,” said Ritscher. “They had the output to cover a very large area, and color temperature was great for television.”

Another exciting visual element of the halftime show was the soaring column of colorized fog rising behind the stage. “The colors and the fog played off well against the sharp white beams of the Nexus Aws,” said Ritscher. “It gave us a very complete and balanced lightshow.”

The fog was provided by six Geyser RGB foggers, which shot red, green and blue shafts of LED light through a voluminous column of white water-based fog to colorize it. Ritscher arranged the Geyser units behind the halftime stage.  At key points in the Little Big Town performance, the Geyser RGB foggers sent towering multi-colored columns of fog streaming over the stage. As these columns spread out over much of the field, they created an aura of festiveness and fantasy around the performance, adding to its appeal.

On a more practical level, Ritscher appreciated the Nexus Aw 7×7 units’ easy rigging system that simplified panel alignment. “There’s always a level of time pressure when you do an event like this,” he said. “The panels were very easy to put together and take apart, so that was a big time saver. We prepared for this for months, set everything up in hours and had the show run for only minutes. It was an experience I wouldn’t trade for the world.”

LightTech Calls On Ovation for the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph

BROOKLYN, NY – A church is first and foremost a house of worship, but beyond that oftentimes it is also many other things to its congregation. Such is certainly the case with the Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph.  A majestic 103-year-old building in Prospect Heights, the church is more than the spiritual hub for the 1.9 million Catholics in the Brooklyn diocese; it is also a gleaming symbol of hope for a neighborhood that is clearly moving into a brighter future. When Pope Benedict elevated the church to a cathedral shortly before his retirement in 2013, the diocese began an extensive renovation project that included a new lighting system from The LightTech Group of Jamaica, NY.

    St Joseph Cathedral

Central to the LightTech Group’s design were 18 Ovation E-190WW LED ellipsoidal fixtures that are used to cover the altar and key worship areas with flat, even fields of warm white light.  Illumination from the Ovation fixtures not only creates an enriched visual experience for worshipers at the 1,500-seat church, it also provides ideal lighting for services that are broadcast on the Catholic Channel.

The Ovation fixtures’ journey to the historic church began when a parishioner, Jacques Pardovany, saw that Saint Joseph was replacing the two large chandeliers that hung over its center aisle leading up to the altar area. Pardovany, who is VP of Sales at the LightTech Group, spoke to the rector, Monsignor Kieran Harrington, about the benefits that LED fixtures could have for the church’s lighting system. This led to a meeting between the Monsignor and the LightTech team, which included John (Gonzo) Gonzalez (who is also the LD on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show from NBCUniversal) and company president Leon Saddler, in addition to Pardovany.

“Monsignor Harrington embraced the idea of what LED ellipsoidals and other LED fixtures could do to enhance the services visually and control costs,” said Saddler. “We were all very excited, because this was a very important project not only for the church, but for the entire community. Having the church declared a cathedral was symbolic in many ways of the neighborhood’s revival.”

Prospect Heights is indeed a neighborhood on the move.  Barclays Center arena is only a block away from the cathedral, and the neighborhood itself is one of the most densely populated in New York City.  As for the church building, it looks every bit the cathedral with its towering 77-foot-high barrel ceiling, 20 dome-shaped vaults lining its side aisles, elaborate tile work and varied murals.

Lighting designer Gonzalez was impressed with the throw distance of the Ovation E-190WW ellipsoidal fixtures in this massive building. “The output of these fixtures is very impressive,” he said. “We hung the Ovations from the balcony area 145 feet from the pulpit and 160 feet from the altar. We used a 5° lens on most of the fixtures and fired them from below the balcony, about 12 feet off the ground.  From this distance, we are getting 40 foot-candles at the altar and pulpit, so yes, we are completely satisfied with the throw; plus the 3000K produces a nice glow for televised services.”

Gonzalez has 11 of the Ovation fixtures directed at the altar area, three at the pulpit and four aimed at the area around the impressive organ at the rear of the church. In addition to the 5° lens, he uses 14° lenses for altar area lighting. For the back wall lighting, he uses 36° lenses.

“We focus pools of light on the altar, the bishop’s chair, the monsignor’s chair, the communion area and a center aisle walk area in front of the parishioners, where the priest will walk out,” said Gonzalez. “We also light the area around the organ with this beautiful warm light to give parishioners an inspiring sight as they leave the church. The other areas are not illuminated directly by the fixtures, because the light fills them nicely without making them intrusive.  We use the blue side of the spectrum on the focus with the Ovation fixtures so there are no harsh red lens lines visible. At the same time, however, there is a distinction between the illuminated and non-illuminated areas to create a theatrical look.”

LightTech installed a Leprecon LPC-96 controller to control the lighting system. “There are three remote buttons on it so the priest can control the lights from sacristy,” said Saddler. “We have a show mode for services and transition modes for other times. There is also an override that can be used for special events, when the lighting can be controlled by the board with LightTech Group’s John Reichle, also employed by MSNBC on NBCUniversal as the LD for the Early Today Show.”

As befits a church that draws people from all over the world, the Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph conducts mass in 42 languages. The liturgical artwork that lines its impressive walls reflects this diversity, with images of Our Lady Queen of Nigeria and Our Lady of Perpetual Help from Haiti, Our Lady of Guadalupe from Mexico, Our Lady of Knock from Ireland and more.

    stjoes2

All of these diverse images are brought out by the warm glow of energy-efficient LED lighting; a fact that makes lighting designer Gonzalez happy to be involved in his profession today. As this New York-based LD is fond of saying, “It is a wonderful era to be involved in church lighting.” Anyone who visits Brooklyn’s new co-cathedral is likely to agree.

NEXUS and NXT-1 Help KM Productions ROCK NYE!

    NYEatNYC2

NEW YORK– In the city that gave us Times Square, New Year’s Eve is just too big to be confined to one night. That is why RPM Presents created Big Week NYC, a weeklong, heart-pounding EDM celebration, to ring in the New Year with sick beats by superstars like Martin Garrix and Kaskade and a scintillating lightshow created by Kevin Mignone and Mike Gionfriddo of KM Productions using a collection of fixtures from CHAUVET Professional.

Held in Manhattan starting December 27 and going on through the wee hours of January 1, the event drew visitors from around the world. Most of the performances took place at Pier 94, a 135,000 square foot historic dock and warehouse that was converted into New York’s hottest pop-up concert venue.

Artists like Carnage, Armin van Buuren and Disclosure rocked the famous Pier 94 stage. This all-star lineup preforming at a world-renowned venue required an intense lightshow, which is exactly what KM Productions created using the ultra-bright Nexus 4×4 LED set pieces and Next NXT-1 moving LED panels. For good measure, the KM designers engaged the crowd with aerial beams from 24 overhead Legend 330SR Spots.

    NYEatNYC1

“We were going for layered fullness in this design,” said Mignone. “Our vision was to fill the room with punchy textured lighting. This is a high-energy, star-studded event on one of the biggest nights of the year so we needed a powerful lightshow. Anyone who’s been to Pier 94 knows it’s a spacious room, so we needed lights that had significant output if we hoped to fill it. The Nexus, NXT-1 and the 330SRs all have the ability to do that, so they were the best choice.”

Mignone and Gionfriddo used 16 Nexus 4 x 4 panels in their Pier 94 design. The panels were positioned throughout the stage on truss and at times ran at 100 percent brightness to create an intense blinder effect. “We were looking for brightness at this kind of event and in this venue, and the Nexus delivered it,” said Gionfriddo.

    NYEatNYC4

The designers positioned 12 Next NXT-1 moving LED panels over the stage, using their built-in dynamic and static patterns to create a variety of audience engaging looks.  “We felt that the moving panels overhead helped draw people into the stage even though the room was very large,” said Mignone. “We also relied on the rapidly moving Legend beams to create a festival feeling throughout the audience. People expect to be a part of something big on New Year’s Eve, and a dynamic lightshow is one of the ingredients that help make that happen.”
